Ages 5–7: Trust and Openness
At this age, keep it simple. The goal is to build trust, not fear.
- "If you see something that makes you feel yucky, tell me — you'll never be in trouble."
- Show them what 'safe' and 'not safe' looks like on their favourite apps.
- Use the family map and check-in features together so they understand it's about care, not control.
Ages 8–11: Boundaries and Consent
Children this age are starting to interact online independently. Focus on boundaries.
- Talk about who is and isn't safe to talk to online.
- Explain that real friends don't ask for secrets from parents.
- Introduce the concept that not everything online is true.
Ages 12–15: Autonomy and Trust
Rangatahi want independence. The key is earning trust while maintaining safety.
- Be transparent about what monitoring exists and why.
- Give them more privacy as they demonstrate responsible behaviour.
- Teach them to recognise grooming tactics and manipulation.
- Make sure they know how to use SOS and who to contact in a crisis.
